Photojournalism is an extremely interdisciplinary subject of study and with the sprinting advances of our technology and means of communication, is becoming ever-more complex and multifaceted. With the courses I have chosen, I believe that I will gain a familiarity with the main and most effective means of visual communication and reporting and have an above-average literacy in more than a single aspect of the complicated profession.
In order to maximize my competency in digital strategies of reporting, I feel that it is necessary to learn the technicalities of moving picture and the mechanics behind creating a finished production. Such editing software is similar to still photography in its indispensability and I think that the security of more than one medium and means of communication is important to reach an audience with a message. Communications is intrinsic in the goal of reporting and the courses within that area of study will leave me better disposed to reach my audience and stimulate thought and change. The visual arts offer a distinct insight into the composition of images and will allow me to maximize the impact of my reporting.
My goal with my studies is to allow me to investigate multiple perspectives and deepen my understanding of ethical issues and social justice that I feel journalism and reporting – across mediums – can bring.
