With the growth and development in technology, photojournalism is becoming even more practical a way to communicate the news. This can be seen just by taking a drive down I-95 and seeing the billboards, or by opening a magazine or newspaper. There is rarely a billboard without a picture to grab attention. Magazines and web pages are filled with advertisements and photographs. And even news organizations make further and further advances in the visual realm since USA Today first revolutionized the business with its graphics. With technology advancing so quickly, the barriers of entry into photojournalism have become less formidable and even passable for amateurs. That is why it is important to bring more than simple photography skills to the table. That being said, the increasing production of online publications also requires more commercial photographers to provide digital images.

With a unique blend of experience in the new media fields, I believe I can facilitate such crossovers of simple stories to online content – even alleviating any extra management that might be needed to translate photographic work into Internet sites. There is much more to converting physical stories into virtual ones than putting the photographs on a page. There are minuscule aspects that can either attract or repel readers and with my marketing and communications experience – plus my attention to detail, which would be most likely increased with my studies – I can maximize the attractiveness of a page. Not one department offers an in-depth look at what I have in mind as my ideal medium of reporting and communication.

English provides some study of the written journalism, but also includes literature. Communications involves a lot of theory versus the practice. New Media covers a wide range of media besides documentation. By choosing the most appropriate courses out of what each department covers, I can create a comprehensive study. By expanding my studies from solely English/Journalism to also include the New Media, Communications and Fine Arts departments, I can achieve a considerable literacy in the digital and multimedia side of journalism and the postproduction aspects of the process.

I will come out of university very familiar with the software and programs for web design. With my additional experience with film and radio broadcasting, I could give stories a comprehensive aspect and brings a novel experience to any audience. With my exploration and analysis of communications I will know what works best to reach society.
